1,3-Butanediol

1,3-Butanediol is a colorless viscous liquid with a slightly bitter sweet taste and strong hygroscopicity. Soluble in water, ethanol, acetone, butanone, castor oil, dibutyl phthalate, almost insoluble in benzene, toluene, carbon tetrachloride, ethanolamines, aliphatic hydrocarbons, mineral oil and linseed oil. The boiling point is high, so it is easy to be oxidized by air during atmospheric distillation, and it should be distilled under reduced pressure.

1,3-Butanediol is used in shampoos and conditioners for damaged hair and in low humidity areas.

Emollients have the effect of softening and softening the skin. Common polyol humectants have the function of emollients; on the contrary, emollients may not have the effect of moisturizing. Oil-in-water emulsions/creams based on mineral oil [(contains

5% of 1,3-butanediol, glycerin or propylene glycol) and (10% white wax oil)] let the testers evaluate the skin feel and efficacy after wiping. The test results show that 1,3-butanediol has the following advantages over glycerol and propylene glycol:

1,3-Butanediol is less greasy than glycerin and propylene glycol.

It is less sticky than glycerin.

1,3-Butanediol is more easily absorbed by the skin than glycerin.

1,3-Butanediol is less film-forming than glycerol and propylene glycol.

1,3-Butanediol Provides a smoother skin feel than glycerin.

The sensitization and potential irritation of cosmetic raw materials to the skin is an important criterion for formulators to choose. Research to date has shown that 1,3-butanediol is significantly less irritating and sensitizing to the skin than propylene glycol.

1,3-Butanediol is more oil soluble than glycerol and propylene glycol, but still miscible with water. 1,3-Butanediol is used to dissolve the active ingredient in ointments, creams and lotions. 1,3-Butanediol has good solvent properties, so it can be added to products such as face wash, makeup remover, and hair dye. In fragrance applications, it is used as a flavor solubilizer and fixative.
